DIY Tokyo Travel Tips

By Dr. Michelle Quinto Araneta

Japan is becoming more popular than ever as a vacation destination for Filipinos. These are the common must-sees for those who plan to visit or revisit Tokyo this summer, DIY (Do-It-Yourself) style. Maybe plan a vacation with your Ophtha friends! All are accessible by public transportation and do not have entrance fees.

  1. Meiji Shrine: The gorgeous trees make the stroll here memorable. Take a picture with the sake barrels donated by breweries across Japan as a sign of respect to the Emperor. Keep an eye out for locals who come in their beautiful kimonos to celebrate a wedding or the boys and girls who commemorate their birthdays. The shrine here honors Emperor Meiji and his Empress. The emperor played a pivotal role in modernizing Japan by leading the county through the Meiji Restoration.
  2. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building at Shinjuku: Visit this at night to see the Tokyo skyline through glass windows on the 45th floor. Before entering, check out the show times for the Tokyo Night & Light. The façade of the building serves as the backdrop for this light projection show, which you can watch at the atrium as you exit the building.
  3. Asakusa Kannon Temple: Take a picture with the famous big red lantern by the main street (look under the lantern to see the carved dragon) before walking through the numerous food and souvenir stalls on the way to the temple. Enjoy delicious snacks like Ginkado Asakusa’s daifuku (mochi with fruit on top and cream inside). As you head towards the temple, you will see the 5-tier pagoda on your left. In Japanese Buddhist tradition, 5-tier pagodas are said to contain Buddha’s ashes. The main temple enshrines a golden image of Kannon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.
  4. Shibuya: Take a picture of its famous chaotic intersection. Close to it is the Hachiko Memorial Statue that honors the loyal dog whose story has touched the hearts of many. Readers may remember Hachiko’s story from the eponymous 2009 film starring Richard Gere.
  5. Tsukiji Outer Market: Walk around and sample local delicacies from seafood to street food.

If you have time, visit Hakone National Park located west of Tokyo. Take the Romance car and buy the day pass (gives access to the train, bus, cable car, and boat, where you can see Mt. Fuji from afar on a clear day). Some of the highlights include the Owakudani (ancient volcanic eruption that still emits steam) and the Open Air Museum (this has an entrance fee but it is a nice outdoor activity and includes access to the Picasso Museum).

Japan is a terrific option as an international destination. Strengthen your bond with your colleagues by building memorable experiences not just in the clinics but outside as well!
